Duties And Responsibilities Of A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer:

Diagnostic ultrasound machines use high-frequency sound waves to create visual images of the inside of the patient’s body. Usually, the diagnostic medical sonographer presses a machine called an ultrasound transducer to the parts of the patient’s body that are to be diagnosed. The duties and responsibilities of a diagnostic medical sonographer are varied, but some important are given below:
  • Ultrasound Testing - The main duty of the diagnostic medical sonographer is to carry out accurate ultrasound tests of a specific part of the body, as directed by a physician. The sonographer will carry out ultrasound testing several times a day.
  • Image Interpretation - After ultrasound testing, the sonographer will examine the test result from the ultrasound machine. He or she will perform measurements and calculations of the images and present the reports to the physician for a diagnosis and treatment purpose.
  • Cardiology - Sonographers also carry out ultrasound tests of the cardiovascular system and heart to identify the blockage in the veins, arteries or heart. The images taken by the ultrasound machines help the physician in detecting any damage from a previous cardiac attack, current issues including the heart pumping too hard or too weak, and to decide if surgery is required.
  • Obstetrics and Gynecologic - Sonographers also use ultrasound machines to view the fetus to determine gender, size, and any potential problems with the fetus. Also, to detect any issues within the cervix, uterus, or vaginal canal.
  • E/R - In an emergency situation, a sonographer uses ultrasound testing to diagnose any injuries inside the body, such as collapsed lungs, appendicitis, brain damage, ruptured spleen, lacerated liver, and shattered bones.
  • Routine Duties - Besides, the main duty of testing, a sonographer has several routine job and duties to perform, including to maintain daily logs of patients seen, carry out regular maintenance of machines and take care of billing procedures.
